Strong winds and heavy rain is forecast for parts of the UK with the arrival of Storm Debi.

The storm will reach northern England and parts of north Wales on Monday morning, with gusts of up to 80mph possible along coastal areas.

The storm developed in the Republic of Ireland, where the most severe red weather warnings are in place.

The Met Office, which monitors UK weather, has issued a less severe amber weather warning in south-west Northern Ireland from 06:00am until midday.

The rest of Northern Ireland is covered by a yellow warning for rain and wind until 2:00pm.

The Met Office has different types of weather warnings to make sure that people stay safe when very bad weather hits the UK.

The warnings have different colours depending on how bad - and potentially dangerous - the weather is. These are red which is the most severe, amber which is the next level down from a red warning, so the situation is not quite as bad and yellow which is the least severe.

Yellow weather warnings for wind are also in place until 6:00pm for much of northern England and Wales, in areas including Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool, Bangor and St Davids.

Debi is the fourth named storm of the season, and arrives after Storm Ciarán caused flooding and disruption across the Channel Islands and southern England - with power cuts, travel problems and hundreds of schools closed.

Another recent storm, Babet, flooded nearly 600 properties in Lincolnshire last month.

A warning for rain between 10:00am and 9:00pm has also been issued for parts of north-east Scotland including Brechin in Angus, where hundreds of homes had to be evacuated after the river South Esk burst its banks during storm Babet.

The Met Office has warned that storm Debi could cause more flooding for some areas, travel delays and power cuts to many parts of the UK.

Simon Partridge, a spokesman for the Met Office, said: "For parts of north-west Wales and England, there is a possibility of 70 to 80mph winds," and urged people to be careful.
